Pong Screensaver for Apple TV is a very cool idea
I suppose it was only a matter of time. With all of the methods available for gamers to watch other gamers play games, and with the amount of time gamers actually spend watching other gamers play games, we’ve now reached the point where we can watch AI play games against itself.
And with Pong, to boot.
Pong Screensaver is exactly what it sounds like…a screensaver that emulates random Pong matches. You’re not playing the game, and you’re not watching other people play the game, it’s simply a video emulation. And because the matches are randomly generated you won’t get the same results each time.
Of course, the developers have added a clock to make it a bit more useful.
Because Pong has very basic and fairly laid-back, the whole experience becomes rather soothing. This makes it good for relaxation, and the effect easily blends into the background when you don’t want to be distracted by your screensaver.
Honestly, I’d love to see this kind of thing with more old video games. I know that emulating a run on most classic arcade games would be difficult, but their demos between quarter drops would make great Apple TV screensavers. Space Invaders, Asteroids, Missile Command, Pac-Man…running your Apple TV could be like walking into an arcade during a slow afternoon, and we all know that was the best time to walk into an arcade.
