A trio of Sonic the Hedgehog games for Apple TV
Yesterday, SEGA Networks announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been added to SEGA Forever, the company’s collection of legacy titles ported to mobile devices. This is welcome news to iOS and Android gamers because Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is still regarded as one of the best entries in the franchise’s turbulent history.
It’s also good news for Apple TV gamers because not only does Sonic the Hedgehog 2 support MFi devices, it’s also available directly for tvOS. So, with your Apple TV and a good gamepad (such as the perpetually recommended SteelSeries Nimbus), you’re getting arguably the purest Sonic gameplay experience this side of the SEGA Genesis.
But the good times don’t have to end with Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Although SEGA hasn’t been great about making most of the SEGA Forever titles Apple TV compatible (how about some Golden Axe and Shinobi, if you please), they’ve done well thus far with their iconic mascot. The original Sonic the Hedgehog is also ready to play on your widescreen TV, as well as Sonic CD from the SEGA CD system era.
As is custom with SEGA Forever releases, you can get each game for free, then choose whether you want to pay $1.99 to remove the ads. It’s worth it, trust me; games and commercials simply don’t mix. Beyond that, the gameplay of these three Sonic titles holds up extremely well. Whereas I may play them for nostalgic reasons, my kids have no such history with Sonic and instead play them simply because they’re still a lot of fun.
We hope to see continued Apple TV support from SEGA, but their Sonic collection is enough to keep us satisfied in the meantime.
