Games barbearian

Barbearian is proof that some games are best on Apple TV

Barbearian, if you haven’t already played it, is a sprawling hack-and-slash game available for PC and iOS from developer Kimmo Lahtinen. It’s also available for tvOS, and this is one of those occasions when the Apple TV is actually the best way to play it.

To understand why, one need only look at the trailer:

That’s a huge playing field full of hand-drawn color and detail. Your iPhone screen is certainly capable of handling that kind of visual intensity, but it’s just too small to provide the full scope of this game. On your TV screen via the Apple TV, however, Barbearian pops the way epic battles do on consoles. You’ll need a MFi controller to complete the experience, of course, but you can then connect this to your iPhone (cloud saves are supported) when playing on the go and you won’t won’t have to worry about enemies hiding under your thumbs.

No matter where you play Barbearian, you will:

  • battle through over 100 levels of action and adventure…this game is not for the easily discouraged
  • collect loot, purchase upgrades and experiment with numerous weapons
  • rescue prisoners and build your own army
  • encounter colossal boss monsters and take them down

It’s worth clarifying that the upgrade purchases mentioned above do not require actual money. Barbearian will cost you $8.99 to download, but there are no in-app purchases, ads or hidden costs to contend with. Buy it once and it’s yours to play without interruption.

Barbearian is available now in the App Store. For more information, visit
