Apps Steelseries Nimbus app

Bring It! Nimbus for Apple TV

This one’s really kind of a no-brainer.

We’ve been singing the praises of the SteelSeries Nimbus wireless gamepad pretty much since the launch of Best Apple TV. Whether you’re playing games on Apple TV or your iOS device, the use of an MFi gamepad raises the experience far beyond what you can get with the Siri Remote or a touchscreen device. In fact, there are quite a few games on Apple TV that you can only play with a gamepad.

If you want a better understanding of Nimbus and its qualifications, you can check out our full review. There, I mentioned that one of my favorite features of the device is one you may not expect.

Perhaps my favorite feature, however, is the free Steelseries Nimbus app for the iPhone. It provides access to firmware updates and a helpful walkthrough of the unit’s controls, but more importantly, it provides a consistently updated list of compatible games you can buy via links within the app.

Let me emphasize that last part; “…it provides a consistently updated list of compatible games you can buy via links within the app.” This is great for iPhone and iPad, as you can actually use this app to find games complex enough to benefit from gamepad controls. You can search by recent releases,  alphabetically or rating.

What you can’t search for, however, is compatibility. Just as with Apple and the App Store, there is no ability in the Nimbus app to search specifically for Apple TV games. It’s a forgivable oversight on the iOS app, but considering the importance of wireless controls when gaming on the Apple TV, SteelSeries really should address this by releasing a tvOS version of the Nimbus app.

Being able to launch an app on your Apple TV to search for tvOS compatible games would be huge with or without MiFi support. It would be especially helpful for those who bought Nimbus for a particular game or two and are now looking for more to play. Without such a service (or the guidance of BEST Apple TV), the Nimbus could find itself collecting dust on a shelf.

I mentioned in my review from September of last year that the Nimbus iOS app should at least break things down by device compatibility. I now would instead like to see a tvOS-specific version that links to App store entries of Apple TV compatible games for information and purchase.

More than any other entry I’ve written for this column, Nimbus is the one app I’d really like see come our way. So, what do you say, SteelSeries? Will you Bring It?
