Amazon readies bid for Premier League streaming rights

Amazon plans to bid for the rights to stream Premier League matches in an upcoming auction, Bloomberg News is reporting Friday, as part of a broader strategy to expand its reach of Amazon Prime and its Prime Video service.

The next auction for various broadcast rights to Premier League games is in February with seven packages up for bidding, varying from 32 matches to 20 matches each. Bloomberg did not say which seven packages were up for bid, nor which geographic regions they include.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the service sees the soccer league as a way to broaden its reach of Amazon Prime to a more global audience, although it is unknown specifically which geographic regions it would try and buy rights to. Amazon could bid for one of the smaller packages for broadcasting in the U.K., according to Bloomberg.

The Premier League and Amazon declined to comment.
