Apple announces tvOS 12 goes ‘Golden Master’ Monday, Sept. 17
Apple seeded the golden master version of tvOS 12 to developers Wednesday and announced during its fall event it will be released to the public on Monday, September 17.
The announcement came with minutes of the golden master being released to developers, with Apple CEO Tim Cook telling onlookers of the final release date.
The golden master represents the final version of tvOS 12 that has been through 10 different beta versions.
The golden master – tested Wednesday by BESTAppleTV, has Dolby Atmos cinematic audio support, which was activated in the second beta version. Apple is slowly adding to iTunes Dolby Atmos-supported content as well, and iTunes libraries will be upgraded for free on all 4K-supported titles.
Swappable screensavers are also now working along with ‘Ariels’ screensavers with videos taken on board the International Space Station in 4K, high-definition. Labeled screensavers are also now live.
Other improvements to Apple TV in tvOS 12 include AutoFill passwords from the iPhone to sign into Apple TV apps, an Apple TV Remote automatically added to Control Center on the iPhone or iPad, and support on Home control systems like Control4, Crestron, and Savant.
tvOS 12 also adds ‘zero sign-on,’ the new technology through Apple TV that will detect the user’s Wi-Fi network and automatically sign them into all the supported apps they receive through their subscription. Zero sign-on will begin with the cable company Charter Communications later this year and will expand to other providers over time, the company said.
Once available Monday, tvOS 12 can be downloaded by going to the Settings app on Apple TV, navigating to ‘System’, then to ‘Software Updates’. The Apple TV can also be set up to receive updates automatically by turning on the ‘Automatically Update’ selection on the same screen.
