Apple releases tvOS 11.4 with AirPlay 2 support
Apple released tvOS 11.4 on Tuesday, the fourth major update to the tvOS operating system almost two months since its inaugural beta release to developers. The updated is focused on various bug fixes, small feature improvements, and AirPlay 2 audio support.
The update is designed for the fourth-generation and fifth-gen 4K Apple TV models.
If you have automatic software updates turned on, chances are good that your Apple TV has already been updated. If not, you can get the update by launching the Settings app and navigating to System > Software Updates and selecting Update Software. Then, select Download and Install.
The tvOS 11.4 update introduces support for AirPlay 2 functionality. Paired with iOS 11.4, iPhone and iPad users can see fourth-generation and fifth-gen Apple TV models in the Home app alongside other HomeKit devices. Apple TV will require a room be assigned allowing content be played back on Apple TV from the Home app on iOS.
Calling it “music everywhere”, the tvOS 11.4 update plays up its ability to use AirPlay 2 and share Siri and music in multiple places.
AirPlay 2 will broadcast multi-room audio allowing the same music to be played on multiple devices throughout the home, including multiple Apple TVs. Siri will now be able to play music or podcasts on Apple TV in a specific room from Siri on an iPhone, iPad, or HomePod.
tvOS 11.4 turns the Apple TV into an AirPlay 2 into a compatible unit for HomeKit devices. AirPlay 2 playback can be controlled through the Apple TV, through an iOS device, or using Apple’s personal assistant, Siri, to play content using voice commands.
AirPlay 2 is limited to the Apple TV and the HomePod at the current time, but it will expand to additional audio devices in the future including third-party devices from Sonos.
