Apple’s spending $240 million on Witherspoon/Aniston TV show
It was announced yesterday that Eddy Cue—Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services—will be speaking at SXSW in Austin, Texas, this March. Perhaps one of the things he can talk about is the whopping $240 million Apple plans to spend on their forthcoming drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.
The as-of-yet untitled show—which sees Witherspoon and Aniston portraying morning news show hosts—is one of the most expensive deals in TV history, according to a report at the New York Times. The show is being produced by Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine, which focuses on projects featuring “strong, complicated women.” Two other Hello Sunshine programs picked up by Apple are the murder mystery Are You Sleeping starring Octavia Spencer and a comedy starring Kristen Wiig.
The show is inspired by Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, Brian Stelter’s behind-the-scenes look at the “morning TV wars.” We don’t know much beyond that (including when the show will air), but the New York Times does report that Apple’s $240 million is going towards two seasons of ten episodes each. Apple’s top TV executives, Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht, believe the investment in the Witherspoon project is worth it, saying in a statement that the actress/producer has “… an extraordinary knack for being a step ahead of the zeitgeist.”
Hopefully Cue will offer more details at SXSW about this and the other TV projects Apple has announced, as it’ll be good to finally tune into some actual programming instead of just announcements. We’ll keep you covered as news comes out of Austin from March 9th through 18th.
