New $179 Apple TV 4K announced; launches Sept. 22

Apple has revamped its streaming, set-top TV box with the announcement Tuesday of the Apple TV 4K that will stream Ultra HD movies purchased through iTunes for the same price as the HD version.

“Now we’re at the next inflection point” for television, CEO Tim Cook said at Apple’s launch event. The new Apple TV 4K will provide “stunning visuals” and deliver “cinematic quality to virtually everything you watch.”

With support for both 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR), the Apple TV 4K features sharper, richer video detail. Among its improvements include…

  • A three + three-core A10X Fusion processor. The fourth-generation model uses a dual-core, 64-bit Apple A8 chip, which provides four times the graphics capability and is the same processor used in the iPad Pro.
  • Is capable of playing 4K video at 60 frames per second.
  • Will output in 2160p (1080p@2x) UHD resolution.
  • Support for both Dolby Vision and HDR10 formats which greatly expands the color depth available on displays.
  • Comes with three gigabytes of SDRAM. The fourth-generation model has two gigabytes of LPDDR3 SDRAM.

The Apple TV 4K will retail for $179US for 32GB of app memory and $199US for the 64GB version. The fourth-generation model will remain in the lineup at $149US for a 32GB version. The Apple TV 4K will be available to order starting Sept. 15, shipping a week later on Sept. 22.

With the Apple TV 4K launch, iTunes will offer multiple titles from Warner Bros., Sony Pictures Television, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures in Ultra HD for the same price as the regular HD versions. iTunes users will get automatic upgrades of HD titles in their existing iTunes library to 4K HDR versions when they become available. Apple TV 4K will also offer 4K HDR content from popular video services, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, in the future.

Later this year, Siri and the TV app on Apple TV and iOS devices will debut additional features to more easily find content, such as live sports and live news. Users will be able to get updates about live sports just by saying “Watch the Warriors game” or “What’s the score of the Cubs game?” and track their favorite teams and get on-screen notifications whenever they are playing.

Additionally, the Apple TV 4K has revamped its entire user interface for the high-resolution format, and the screensavers have been revised to support HDR.

Starting this month, the TV app will be available in Australia and Canada, in addition to the US. By the end of the year, it will expand to France, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the UK.

A look at the technical specifications of the new Apple TV 4K shows the omission of the USB-C connector (see above), no physical dimension or weight changes to the main processor unit, an upgrade to gigabit Ethernet from 10/100BASE-T Ethernet, and the addition of simultaneous dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) 802.11ac WiFi.
