Burton/Schumacher “Batman” movies coming to digital 4K, theaters this year

If you’re a fan of the 80s/90s Batman films directed by Tim Burton and later by Joel Schumacher, great news! With the 40th anniversary of the first film coming up this year, it’ll be ICE to see them not only in theaters for one-day-only screenings, followed by a first-ever release of the film on Blu Ray and digital 4k streaming directly to your Apple TV.

Burton’s Batman  was released in 1989 and was a watershed moment for superhero filmmaking. The other three films were met with diminishing returns, with Schumacher’s 1997 Batman & Robin regularly appearing on lists of the worst films of all time. But frankly, I think those critics need to CHILL!

For fans who want to own and enjoy the set of films on their 4k Apple TV in Ultra HD, you’ll be able to purchase them digitally on June 4, 2019, followed by a Blu Ray release on September 17. They’ll feature a Dolby Atmos remix of the soundtrack, and “include more than 17 hours of previously released extras, including full-length commentaries.”

But if you want the full theater experience of the films, SNOW problem! Fathom events is partnering with over 600 theaters across the country for screenings:

  • Batman (1989) – Saturday, May 4, 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Batman Returns (1992) – Monday, May 6, 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
  • Batman Forever (1995) – Sunday, May 12, 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Batman & Robin (1997) – Tuesday, May 14, 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

There have been, as of press time, no plans for a 4k remaster 1966’s Batman: The Movie starring Adam West, which is, however, available as a 1080p Blu Ray. But I find that to be COLD comfort.
