CES 2018: Hands-on with the ConnectSense Smart In-Wall Outlet

Adding a smart plug to a wall outlet is one of the easiest ways to get started with your smart home and Apple’s HomeKit technology, but it leaves you with an “accessory” sticking out of your wall. If you prefer for your devices to be hidden, ConnectSense’s Smart In-Wall Outlet is just what you need.

The Smart In-Wall Outlet is a hard-wired version of the company’s external Smart Outlet. Once installed, the Outlet allows you to control and monitor lights, ceiling fans, or any device plugged into either one of its WiFi-connected outlets. The Outlet senses when a device is plugged in, making control available via the app, built-in touch controls, or voice via third party devices such as Siri.

Perhaps most important to our audience is integration with HomeKit—Apple’s software framework that allows you to configure and control compatible smart devices in your home. Connected devices can be controlled individually or in groups (or “scenes”) via the Home app, Siri, and other devices whether you’re home or away.

Regarding HomeKit support, ConnectSense explains:

The Smart In-Wall Outlet is integrated with Apple HomeKit technology providing quick and powerful access to control Smart In-Wall Outlets anywhere in the home via Siri voice commands through an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, or by using the Apple Home app. This allows for control over both individual and groups of devices, as well as allowing interaction with a growing list of other HomeKit-enabled products from many different manufacturers.

With your Apple TV serving as your HomeKit hub, you can also control the Smart In-Wall Outlet when away from home.

Misleading headline. Not really a “hands on”…more like a “first look”.
