CES: Lose your Apple TV remote? Puck it

So, you’ve lost your Apple TV remote and you don’t want to pay $79 to replace it. Or maybe you want to combine multiple remotes onto one cell phone. It’s very possible with the $30 Puck from SmashToast.

Barnabas Helmy is its creator, and it’s all the result of his daughter losing an Apple TV remote years ago. The Puck is a Bluetooth Low Energy bridge that connects infrared remote-controlled devices to smartphones with the accompanying mobile app. Simply attach it near the device you want to control, configure it with a free iPhone app (Android version coming soon), and you can control an Apple TV, TVs, soundbars, a cable box, a streaming media player, or even heaters, fans and more—all together on one handheld device.

While the Puck’s virtual Apple TV remote on the iPhone doesn’t currently have trackpad capabilities, Helmy said he’s working to add that functionality and expand its true potential. He’s also working on a hub for Pucks that would allow connectivity with Apple Home Kit, let users talk to Siri via the Puck app, and control various other devices around the home.

We were impressed with its simplicity and low price, and we look forward to putting it through its paces for a full BEST Apple TV review soon. In the meantime, you can listen to my interview with Barnabas Helmy.
