DirecTV Now updated for Apple TV
AT&T on Wednesday released an update to its DirecTV Now app, bringing it to v1.1.8. Whether it corrects the ongoing and rampant problems users have reported with the service, we’ll have to see; AT&T only declared “performance enhancements and bug fixes” with the update.
DirecTV Now is AT&T’s standalone streaming service for live TV and on-demand entertainment, including premium channels and some local stations (depending upon your area). Of course, what you get will depend upon how much you’re willing to pay per month, but you can rest assured it’ll be cheaper than a DirecTV satellite subscription (and with far fewer channels to block).
In addition, AT&T has extended its offer of a free 32GB Apple TV 4K for those who prepay for four months of the service. If you’re not happy after that, cancel your subscription and keep the Apple TV.
Whether you’ll be happy depends largely on the success of updates such as this one. DirecTV Now’s cloud-based DVR service is still in beta, and the streams themselves continue to interrupted by buffering and outage issues for thousands of users. That’s not preventing would be cord cutters from subscribing, however; AT&T announced during its fourth-quarter 2017 earnings conference call in late January that DirectNow has reached over 1.2 million subscribers.
Regarding the performance issues, DirectTV has not responded to multiple requests for comment by BESTAppleTV.com. Hopefully, the v1.1.8 update addresses the problems.
The service really is a great deal for cord-cutters…when it works.
