Hulu hits 1 million subscribers
The live video streaming service Hulu with Live TV, which launched last year and now has 60-plus live channels, now has more than one million subscribers, the company reported Monday. Together with its on-demand and movie service, Hulu has more than 20 million subscribers.
“This has been a pretty big year for Hulu. We have won some historic awards and, importantly, grown our business tremendously,” said Kelly Campbell, Hulu’s chief marketing officer.
Consumer research done by Hulu has found that consumers associate Hulu with television similar to how they associate Hershey’s with chocolate, Campbell said. “People think of us as TV,” she said. “That’s great, but we need people to take another look so they realize all we have to offer now.”
The company reported back in May that it passed 800,000 customers for the streaming service alone, a 22 percent increase in the past of four months.
In terms of reported subscribers of the eight live streaming services available on Apple TV, Sling TV leads with 2.2 million paid customers, DirecTV Now with 1.8 million, and now Hulu With Live TV in third place with one million. A number of industry analysts believe YouTube has also reached one million, but the company does not publicly report subscriber numbers.
At the end of 2017, more than five million consumers in the U.S. subscribed to a live streaming service. Industry estimates are that number will exceed 10 million by 2021.
Hulu now reaches 80 percent of Americans with local network affiliates from NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox. Hulu now has more local affiliates than any live streaming service available on Apple TV with 626, with YouTubeTV in second with 475, and DirecTV Now with 359 for third place.
Hulu with Live TV launched in May 2016 and is jointly owned by Fox, Disney/ABC, Comcast/NBC Universal and Time Warner. The app is available in the App Store, with Live TV subscriptions starting at $39.99 a month.
