Infuse 6 media player now available for Apple TV

Firecore has released a major version update of their Apple TV media player, Infuse. One can argue the market for such software is divided between VLC and Plex, but unlike its competitors having clients on nearly every possible platform, Infuse Pro remains available solely on iOS and tvOS.

The v6 update brings several long-awaited features:

  • iCloud syncing of metadata in the library, so you can start watching on one device and finish on another from the same spot.
  • A revamped playback experience compatible with 4K HDR content.
  • Support for downloading subtitles (without any ads) from opensubtitles.org.
  • On iOS, integration with the Files app, allowing for better organization of video files.
  • Also on iOS, full support for AirPlay 2 and HomePod speakers.
  • Light and dark mode.

I’ve been an Infuse user since v4, and I prefer it over Plex. It supports playing content not only from external physical NAS or Macbook, but also from cloud services such as Google Drive. It can even connect directly to an existing Plex server and get access to its metadata. Infuse is easy to configure, and its UI looks clean and “Apple-ish,” especially on Apple TV.

Infuse is available in the App Store free of charge. An optional Pro subscription enables additional codecs support (e.g. Matroska) for $9.99/year with a one month free trial. You can also purchase Infuse Pro 6 directly for $29.99. For more information, visit firecore.com.
