NBC to live stream 1,800 hours of Winter Olympics
Winter will be here before we know it, and with it, so will the Winter Olympics and lots of hours in front of the TV. Your Apple TV.
In anticipation, NBC has announced it will live stream 1,800 hours of coverage for the 2018 Winter Olympic games next February both online and through the NBC Sports app, which is available on the Apple TV set-top box.
NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app will deliver live streams of all 15 sports – a record number of hours for any winter games – along with on-demand replays of selected programming.
NBC will also broadcast three programs exclusively on digital platforms. The Gold Zone channel will recap the days’ events taking viewers to 102 live medal-related events. Olympic Ice will offer a comprehensive post-competition review of figure skating news and highlights. Off the Post will be a live hockey studio show following each day’s final game with reviews, highlights, interviews, analysis, and previews.
NBC will offer an enhanced live streaming experience around select sports, including Alpine skiing and figure skating. More details on enhanced streaming will be announced at a later date, the network said.
Viewers will have to authenticate their subscription to pay TV to watch the games through their Apple TV. Users will be able to stream 30 minutes of coverage prior to authenticating on their first visit. On preceding days, users will be able to watch five minutes of programming before authenticating.
Separate from live, linear programming broadcast through NBC over-the-air affiliates, the networks large commitment to streaming content is stronger evidence that live-TV viewing is quickly falling with more and more people watching DVR and time-shifted programming. Industry analysts believe NBC is looking to hedge against potential low viewership among the 18-49 year old demographic by offering more streaming programming.
The upcoming winter games will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea from February 9th to the 25th.
