New TiVo combines cable and streaming into one platform
The pioneering DVR maker TiVo is betting the future of your TV viewing will come from the cloud and Thursday announced a new streaming service for cable and streaming operators based around it.
Called the Next-Gen Platform, TiVo claims its the future of TV viewing by bringing together recorded content from both cable providers and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime and promising a more convenient way to find and watch content from those sources.
TiVo says the Next-Gen Platform will run on various products like TiVo for Apple TV, Amazon Fire, and Android TV. It has also launched smartphone, web and Linux-based set-top box software that can be integrated into smart TVs, cable boxes, and other devices. Operators can implement software in both “managed” devices like set-top boxes, or unmanaged ones like Apple TV.
The announcement days before the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show – or CES – in Las Vegas is meant to draw the attention primarily of industry leaders including cable systems in the hopes they will license the platform. It remains to be seen when and where TiVo’s new platform will show up and if the cable industry will embrace its approach to combining various types of content.
