Plex announces free web show feature
Plex announced Wednesday the new Plex Web Shows beta feature to its service, allowing users to watch web shows for free without a media server or a Plex subscription.
Plex Web Shows provides unlimited on-demand streaming of a curated selection of web shows on any device where Plex content can be accessed, including Apple TV.
Currently in beta, Plex plans to offer access to web shows across a range of interests, such as food, home and garden, science and tech, entertainment, and more. Web shows available at launch include Epic Meal Time, ASAPscience, Household Hacker, People are Awesome, and The Pet Collective, along with content from brands like Pitchfork, GQ, Saveur, and Epicurious.
Plex already provides free news shows and podcasts. web shows will expand that content for free with no cable subscription.
According to the company, web shows – like Plex News and Plex Podcasts – will get better as users add to their content through recommendations based on interests and previously-watched programming.
Plex Web Shows joins the ranks of Plex Podcasts and Plex News alongside personal media collections that Plex users can add to their collection.
Plex Web Shows are available on Plex starting today. The Plex Apple TV app has been available since 2010 and was updated in early September.
