Sling TV users can try NFL Red Zone for free this weekend
Sling TV has been available on Apple TV since June of 2016, and has quickly become one of the better digital streaming services available. For NFL fans, it’s going to get a little bit better as the company once again runs a free NFL Red Zone promotion, according to a report at Cord Cutter News.
Normally part of the $10/month Sports Extra package available to Sling Blue subscribers ($25/month), NFL Red Zone will once more be available for free to those on Sling Blue from 1pm through 8pm Eastern, November 4th. This will give users Red Zone access to 10 NFL games airing on CBS and Fox, but won’t inlcude Sunday night’s game between Green Bay and New England or Monday night’s Tennessee/Dallas matchup.
NFL RedZone will appear right after the NFL Network in the Sling channel lineup. The channel provides “whip around” simulcast coverage of all Sunday afternoon games, showing “every touchdown from every game,” commercial-free. The coverage is is especially handy for fantasy football players, reporting superlatives and tracking various statistical accomplishments throughout the afternoon.
Coverage switches to split-screen display as needed, with two, three, four (“quad-box”), five (“Penta-box”), or as many as eight (“Octo-box”) game feeds being shown simultaneously. Producers in the studio monitor all game feeds in-progress, and decide which game to feature at any given moment. NFL television rules are exempted for RedZone, and live look-ins of games that are subject to blackout are still allowed to be aired in all markets.
Whenever a team enters the red zone (the area of the field between the 20-yard line and the goal line) the coverage switches to a full-screen live look-in of that game’s television broadcast in an attempt to cover a potential touchdown or field goal. It is not unusual for RedZone to switch between two or more games in quick succession, even between individual plays. Despite an effort made by producers to air all touchdowns live, some scoring plays are actually aired after a very brief time shift because another scoring play is unfolding elsewhere.
If you would like to experience NFL Red Zone and you’re not already a subscriber, you can try Sling TV free for 7 days. The free Sling TV app for Apple TV is available for download from the App Store.
