Sonos speakers now AirPlay 2-ready for Apple TV

Sonos announced Tuesday its speakers now support Apple AirPlay 2 and can be used for multi-room audio playback with HomePod and Apple TV.

The announcement makes compatible Sonos speakers the first third-party AirPlay 2 speakers to hit the market.

Users can also now use Siri to control Apple Music and podcast playback from iPhone, iPad, HomePod, or Apple TV over Wi-Fi. For example, after a speaker is named and assigned to a room, users could say “Hey Siri, play music from Adele in the living room” as well as play everywhere there is an AirPlay 2-ready speaker.

Sonos said its older speakers do not support AirPlay 2 on their own due to processor limitations, but can be paired through the Sonos app to enable support for Apple’s new protocol. An older Playbar paired with a Playbase, for example, will work with AirPlay 2.

Sonos customers have long wanted AirPlay support for their speakers, but citing issues with latency and playback interruptions as reasons for not adopting Apple’s wireless streaming protocol, Sonos has been hesitant in supporting the standard until now. Sonos changed their tune when Apple unveiled AirPlay 2, which reduces latency and Wi-Fi interruptions.

Sonos customers can update compatible speakers through the software update section of the Sonos controller app.
