Spectrum TV Essentials streaming service coming to Apple TV
If you’ve been thinking of dumping cable for an over-the-top (OTT) video service or dumping your current streaming provider for something a little less expensive, you’ve got a new option to consider…provided you’re a Spectrum Internet customer. Charter Communications announced Wednesday that Spectrum Internet Essentials will be available for $14.99 a month by the end of March.
To get it, however, you have to be a Spectrum Internet customer who doesn’t already subscribe to Spectrum video services.
The service will be set up similarly to Philo, which offers 44 channels for $16/month or 57 channels for $20/month. This makes Spectrum TV Essentials look like the better deal on paper, as the service will give you 60 lifestyle, entertainment and news channels for just $15/month.
Missing from the lineup are sports channels such as ESPN, NBCSN and FS1, as well as popular news outlets CNN and MSNBC. There will also be no locals, so subscribers will need an OTA setup in order to access area news and programming.
So, what do you get with your subscription? At press time, the channel list includes:
A&E, AMC, American Heroes Channel, Animal Planet, AXS TV, BBC America, BBC World News, BET, BET Her, BET Jams, BET Soul, Bloomberg, Cheddar, CLEO TV, CMT, CMT Music, Comedy Central, Cooking Channel, Destination America, Discovery, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, DIY, Food Network, FYI, Game Show Network, Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Drama, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, HDNet Movies, HGTV, HISTORY, IFC, Investigation Discovery, Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network, Logo, MotorTrend Network, MTV, MTV2, MTV Classic, MTV Live, MTVU, NewsmaxTV, Newsy, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nick Music, NickToons, Outdoor Channel, OWN, Paramount Network, Science Channel, Sundance TV, Teen Nick, TLC, Travel Channel, TV Land, VH1, Viceland, The Weather Channel and WEtv.
New York, Los Angeles, Tampa, Charlotte, Orlando, and certain other markets will also receive Spectrum News. In addition, a feature called Spectrum Originals will become available to all Spectrum TV Essential subscribers in May of this year.
Spectrum TV Essentials will be available for $14.99/month when it launches in March, and the entire line-up will be available through the Spectrum TV App, currently available for free for Apple TV.
The app allows customers to browse shows and movies by category or network, create a “Watch List” of your favorite content, set parental controls, and more. In the coming months, Charter plans to update the app with a Cloud DVR feature.
