Starz comes to Amazon Prime in UK, Germany; joining YouTube TV in June

Lionsgate is expanding the availability of its premium movie channel Starz, launching the service on Amazon Prime in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Austria with plans to bring the service to YouTube TV in the U.S. in June.

“This is another major step in rolling out Starz as a global consumer brand,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer during a conference call last Thursday with investors.

Feltheimer said Starz has more than doubled the number of streaming subscribers in the year. It also reduced the number of online subscribers canceling the service to its lowest point ever. Overall subscriber numbers fell to 23.5 million, down about 700,000 from a year ago.

The Amazon launch in Europe is a milestone in Lionsgate’s plan to roll out the Starz brand in 15 territories over the next three years, Feltheimer said. Starz is being offered as a monthly add-on for £4.99/€4.99 and is available now through the Amazon Prime Video app on the Apple TV App Store in both countries.

Come October, the service will be offered on the streaming service Hulu as well.

Pricing for Starz on YouTube TV – which is available on Apple TV – has not yet been announced. Presently available through Amazon Prime Video on Apple TV, the service costs $8.99 a month.
