tvOS 11.2.6 available for Apple TV
If you’re the owner of an Apple TV 4K or 4th Gen, you can head on into your system prefs to update to tvOS 11.2.6. Apple released the update yesterday to address a memory corruption issue.
Specifically, Apple detected a maliciously crafted string that could lead to heap corruption when processed, causing the device to crash. Apple states they addressed the issue “… through improved input validation.”
To update your 4th Gen or Apple TV 4K to tvOS 11.2.6, use your Siri Remote to go to Settings > System > Software Update > Update Software. If you have automatic updates turned on, this will let you know what you’re already up-to-date.
Of course, this is just an incremental fix ahead of the tvOS 11.3 update that is currently in beta. That release will bring AirPlay 2 support, allowing fourth and fifth-generation Apple TV users to be added to the Home app as part of a HomeKit setup—good news for those looking to connect their Apple TV to their new HomePod.
Other updates coming in tvOS 11.3 include support for frame rate matching, enhancements to Match Content support, and automatic mode switching for AirPlay video sessions. No official release date has been announced, but we can count on seeing the update this spring.
