Watch Black Mirror: Bandersnatch on Apple TV via (wait for it…) mirroring

As we reported last week, the interactive “Bandersnatch” episode of Black Mirror—which allows viewers to determine the progression of the story as with an old Choose Your Own Adventure novel—was not made available for Apple TV. Netflix—the streaming service which airs the show—didn’t offer much of an explanation as to why it couldn’t be viewed on Apple TV, stating only, “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is only available on devices that support interactive content. No linear version is available.”

Never mind that Apple TV certainly does support interactive content, we’re here to help where Netflix won’t.

If you haven’t already watched the episode on your iPhone or other supported device, we do have one possible way to view it on your TV via Apple TV: mirroring. In other words, you’ll pull it up on your iPhone and handle the interactive elements there while mirroring it all to your TV.

Before I get into how this is done, I should put out that some of our readers have commented that they could not get any sound when they attempted to watch it via AirPlay. Gary Ng of iPhone of Canada reported success with this method, however, so it’s worth a try. I tested it with my Apple TV 4K and iPhone XR, all running the latest OS versions, and it worked for me.

  1. Launch Control Center (swipe down from the top right with iOS 12, up from the bottom with an earlier version).
  2. Tap “Screen Mirroring.”
  3. Select the Apple TV to which you want to stream the show.

Apple TV iOS mirroring

Of course, your Apple TV needs to be on and connected to your iPhone, but once that’s all done you should now be seeing your iPhone’s screen on your TV. Simply launch the Netflix app and start the show.

Because of resolution and screen size conflicts, this obviously isn’t the best way to go. The episode will look clearer on your iPhone than it will on the TV, but it’s at least a way for multiple people to watch without having to crowd over your phone.

If you give this a shot, be sure to let us know if you had similar issues with the audio not carrying over.
